MEMORY


Contestants must perform from memory, with the exception of the violin/piano or cello/piano duos, which should be performed with the score.

1. DVD PRELIMINARY ROUND

    Repertory Requirements:


  1. Solo of the contestant's choice -- entire composition or movement(s)
  1. First movement of selected concerto from the Collaborative Repertory          

List of Concertos:

  • The same concerto must be performed in the Semifinal Recital

  • The second pianist must not be visible on the DVD.
  • Contestants may submit concerto performances with orchestra, provided the concerto is the same that the contestant will perform in the competition

    Semifinal Round Recital Requirements :

  1. Contestants will perform two programs in the Semifinal Round:

SOLO RECITAL PROGRAM • COLLABORATIVE RECITAL PROGRAM

  1. PianoArts will provide all collaborative musicians.There will be no extra costs

for contestants.

  1. At least one composition performed during the Semifinal Rounds (the concerto or another work) must be from the Classical period.
  1. Please note below the length of the recitals. Contestants will not be cut off if they

go over the alloted time; however, the judges will note the lack of professional time management.

2. SOLO RECITAL PROGRAM


    Repertory Requirements:

  1. Any Prelude and Fugue by JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH from

The Well Tempered Clavier, Book I or II

  1. Solo of the contestant’s choice (may be the same or different from DVD solo   

  -- entire work or movement(s)

  1. Any nocturne by FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN
  1. North American composition written after 1940 -- entire work or movement(s)


The recital will last 40 minutes and will include 5 minutes devoted to:

    • brief comments about why the pianist selected the contestant's choice solo
    • speaking about and performing examples from the North American work

3. COLLABORATIVE RECITAL PROGRAM

    Repertory Requirements:

  1. Solo of the contestant's choice (different from that in the Solo Semifinal Recital)

-- entire composition or movement(s)

  1. Violin/piano or cello/piano duo, without repeats, from Collaborative Repertory   

List of Duos

  1. First movement of the selected concerto from Collaborative Repertory List of Concertos

The recital will last 35 minutes.Timings to consider:

    • 10 minutes (maximum) will be devoted to speaking about and performing examples from the concerto
    • The second pianist performing the orchestral reduction will play an introduction of approximately 8 measures

4. FINAL ROUND & AWARDS CONCERT

All movements of the selected concerto will be performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

 

COLLABORATIVE REPERTORY LIST

1. CONCERTOS

All movements of the concerto are required and will be performed during the Concerto Master Class and Final Round & Awards Concert. Only the first movement is required for the DVD Preliminary Round and the Collaborative Semifinal Recital. Contestants must choose the same concerto for all rounds.

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

  • Concerto no. 1 in C major, Opus 15
  • Concerto no. 2 in B–flat major, Opus 19

FELIX MENDELSSOHN

  • Concerto no. 1 in G minor, Opus 25
  • Concerto no. 2 in D minor, Opus 40

ROBERT SCHUMANN

  • Concerto in A minor, Opus 54

FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN

  • Concerto no. 2 in F minor, Opus 21

  • Seven Variations on “Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen”from Mozart’s Magic Flute, WoO 46

ROBERT SCHUMANN

  • Fantasiestücke, Opus 73 – all movements

          JOHANNES BRAHMS

  • Sonata in E minor, Opus 38 – first movement


After submitting the application, the contestant may not change his or her concerto. Other changes in repertory must be approved no later than April 27, 2012 by contacting the PianoArts office by phone or Email.
